Goodbye

The sun is coming up and it is one of those times that pink wispy clouds, float across the sky, seemingly, chasing the night away and welcoming the day. It is going to be a beautiful fall day.

Today is also the funeral for my Grandpa Wayne. Grandpa Wayne came into my life almost 15 years ago. I was recently engaged and as it turns out so was my Grandma who had been a widow for more than 10 years. I wasn't quite sure what to make of this Wayne person, my memories of my grandpa were so strong in my heart, I wasn't sure that I wanted a Grandpa Wayne.

Well time passed and the more I saw my grandma and Grandpa Wayne I began to realize how lucky my grandma was. She found a person who loved to do the things she loved to do. They traveled together, taking trips all over the country and one or two out of the country. They went on cruises and for the first time in a very long time she had a golfing partner.

When she married Wayne he was not a member of our religion. However, not even a half a year in to the marriage he became a member. The transition was so smooth that I think he had always been a member. He was one of the kindest people you ever met. He didn't like my grandma gossiping or saying mean things. Even when she would get going, as you know us women are prone to do, he would cut her off and say something nice. Of course, this would make us all fill ashamed and want to be better.

Together grandma and Grandpa Wayne worked in the temple and did volunteer work. One of the places you could always find them was at the air force Museum. Wayne had been a fighter pilot in another life and he loved giving tours. He worked there almost until the end.

I had children and he welcomed them into his life with open arms. They traveled to California to help bless our babies. You never saw a grandpa who would chuckle and cuddle little ones like Grandpa Wayne. When we moved to Utah and were short on family grandma and grandpa would show up to programs and laugh and be the best grandparents. Afterward, big hugs for the kids and tell them they were the best ones. Grandpa was always smiling. He always admired my children and loved them as a grandpa should.

It was probably about 5 years ago that one of my children talking to Grandpa Wayne started the conversation by saying, “Wayne,” that I realized that my long habit of calling him Wayne had rubbed off on to them. That night when we came home I decided that if anyone deserved to be called grandpa it was Wayne. So to my family he became Grandpa Wayne.

It is sad that we have to say goodbye to Wayne today and I am blessed with a religion that has taught me that today is not goodbye forever. Today is a celebration of a wonderful person with a wonderful heart. I hope that I as I remember Grandpa Wayne I can be a better person and an example of the kindness he lived daily.

Goodbye Grandpa, say hi to everyone for me.

What a loving post to someone who joined your family so late. As it sounds he embraced his wifes family and enjoyed loving them as much as she did. Your grandma was so lucky to have found this person to share her "golden years" with. My thoughts are with your family. This has been a tough year as it
has called many of our loved ones "home".

At my Age

I saw this quote the other day and had to smile. It has been interesting finishing school at my age. I have had this feeling more than once that I am a little old, and finishing school is something I should have done a long time ago. Usually I remind myself that we all have our own paths to take in life. My path had me marry at 19 and become the mother of four beautiful rug rats by 27. Marriage and children defined me more than anything. I became more aware of my talents and abilities. I really didn't know who I was before I became a wife and mother. Waiting until now to finish my degree gave me time to figure out who I am. Well, at least to have a better idea of who I am. I love being in a classroom, I love learning, and I love helping others learn. My inner nerd does little happy dances every time I learn something new. Each person on this planet has their own God given talents. We have a responsibility to find our talents and to make the world a better place. How old you are wh...

Pinewood Derby or Bust!

If there is one thing that Brent and I both agree on.  One thing that we both believe is essential to the proper development, growth, and raising of a son. That no boyhood would be complete with out.  It would be participation in the Pinewood Derby.   Yes, on this one thing Brent and I are in total agreement.  A boyhood is not a true boyhood until a boy has built a pinewood derby car and then competed in a pinewood derby.  It is that important!  I'm sorry if you have never had the opportunity to live in a house filled with the air of pinewood derby. If you have never had the opportunity of watching a father stand to the side as his son uses HIS power tools. The opportunity to take a chunk of wood and see that inside the wood is the makings of a CAR.   You wonder why men are so obsessed with cars, with how there made, and how fast they go.  Well if you have ever brought home a pinewood derby box kit to a home with boys and men all your questions would be answered. Once the car is b...

The Kids Today

S. is now 11 years old and is counting down the days until she turns 12. She is in the fifth grade and says math is her favorite subject. She stays pretty busy with swimming and soccer. This past year in addition to a regular AYSO team she has been competing on an All Star Team. She has really enjoyed it and is really looking forward to a tournament that will take place in Hawaii this July. She still loves swimming and is still competing when she can. A. is 9 years old and is the professor of the house.  He is our silent man whose brain is in constant motion.  He reads and reads and reads and soon will read me out of house and home.  He enjoys video and computer games, and he loves playing sports.  In January he made the city swim team and continues to play soccer, basketball, and anything that I let him.  Al will soon be eight.  As in next week soon.  The best part of school she says is 3:25 when pressed for a better answer than that she say...
